Professional Licensure Disclosure Clinical Psychopharmacology
The Master of Science in Clinical Psychopharmacology (MSCP) program is designated by the American Psychological Association (APA) as meeting the APA Recommended Designation Criteria for Education and Training Programs in Preparation for Prescriptive Authority.
At this time, completion of Â鶹´«Ã½AV’s APA-designated Master of Science in Clinical Psychopharmacology (MSCP) program meets the educational requirements for prescriptive authority training for psychologists in all U.S. states and territories. However, educational preparation is only one component of prescriptive authority licensure. Each state and jurisdiction has its own additional requirements, which may include supervised clinical rotations, postdoctoral practice hours, examinations, background checks, and other statutory criteria.
As of 2025, the jurisdictions with legislation allowing specially trained psychologists to prescribe medication include:
New Mexico, Louisiana, Illinois, Iowa, Idaho, Colorado, and Utah.
Other federal systems granting prescriptive authority for appropriately trained psychologists include the Department of Defense, the U.S. Public Health Service, and the Indian Health Service.
While ISU’s MSCP program meets national educational standards, state-specific clinical training requirements can vary significantly and may change over time. Students intending to pursue prescriptive authority outside of Idaho are strongly encouraged to review their state’s current statutes and rules to determine any additional requirements necessary for licensure eligibility.
Students have successfully obtained prescriptive authority in Idaho upon completion of the program and required clinical supervised practice. For all other states and jurisdictions, you must verify requirements directly with the appropriate licensing or regulatory board, as prescriptive authority laws and rules evolve and may differ from Idaho’s training structure.
If you have questions about licensure or prescriptive authority requirements in a particular state or territory, we recommend contacting the state’s psychology licensing agency or regulatory board before beginning the ISU program.
