This One is for the Birds: SAGE WISDOM WEST Film Screening April 15

March 12, 2026

Sage grouse

The Idaho Museum of Natural History is hosting a film screening SAGE WISDOM WEST by Emmy-winning journalist, Kris Millgate, April 15 at Frazier Hall.

Millgate has documented disappearing salmon across the Northwest and recovering grizzlies in Greater Yellowstone, and a high desert adventure with the largest grouse in North America. SAGE WISDOM WEST found Millgate road tripping in summer 2024 working out of her Toyota Tundra paired with her camper while following grouse through Idaho, Montana, Nevada, Oregon and Wyoming. This film is produced by Tight Line Media with support from Toyota.

Greater sage grouse live in the West’s most dominant landscape, sagebrush steppe. Both the bird and the brush are shrinking because of us and in spite of us. SAGE WISDOM WEST celebrates the dynamic upland bird’s continued existence in modern-day America while also documenting humanity’s impact on native species.

"I knew sage grouse would be hard to record in the sagebrush steppe because their numbers shrink as the desert's limited canopy shrinks," said Millgate. "But I had no idea what else I would find crawling around in the dirt looking for birds. The rugged country grouse rely on is a remarkable landscape where the wild is trying to make its way with us in the way."

Hop on the high desert adventure April 15 at 6 p.m. at Frazier Hall. The evening will include a short presentation from Millgate, SAGE WISDOM WEST film, book signing of My Place Among Birds, and light refreshments. For ticket information visit isu.edu/imnh.
